Project Name: IRN AP08856022 Modification of petroleum bitumen by industrial and municipal polymer wastes

Scientific supervisor of the project: PhD, associated professor, Imanbaev E.I.

Grant financing sum: 59 719,0 thousand tenge for 2020-2022, including by years: 2020 – 15 214,9 thousand tenge, 2021 – 19 564,8 thousand tenge, 2022 – 24 939,2 thousand tenge.

Relevance of the project. The project is dedicated to research and develop technology to modify oil road bitumen industrial and municipal polymeric waste such as oil sludge and plastic waste to recycle wastes and improve the physical and chemical characteristics of road bitumen.

Currently, a large amount of carbon-containing waste, such as oil sludge and plastics, is accumulated annually in the Republic of Kazakhstan and in many other countries around the world. They are difficult to biodegrade and non-destructive wastes and represent, on the one hand, a great potential danger to the environment, and on the other hand, a huge amount of secondary raw materials for recycling into alternative organic materials. Most of the leading countries of the world are intensively working on the improvement and creation of the new technologies for processing the oil-slime and plastics wastes, as well as on the improvement of the indicators of the separate stages of the developed processes, which considerably increases the effectiveness of the method in general. Herewith, much attention is paid to the ecological aspects of recycling, namely, to creation of wasteless and low-waste resource-saving technologies.

Therefore, such problems as the development of technology for modifying oil road bitumen by industrial and municipal polymer wastes, the creation and improvement of specialized equipment, producing modified bitumen with desired properties depending on the application, and other issues are relevant.

Project Goal and Objectives
Project goal is the research and development of technologies of oil bitumen modification by industrial and domestic wastes for oil sludge and domestic plastic wastes utilization and for improvement of physical and chemical rheological characteristics of bitumens in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
To achieve the goal the following main objectives of the project will be solved:
1. Establishing the composition and physico-chemical characteristics of bitumen, oil sludge and plastic waste;
2. Study of the impact of oil sludge on the physico-chemical characteristics of bitumen;
3. 3. Suggest options of oil-slime waste beneficial use in production of polymer-bitumen binders;
4. study of the influence of plastic wastes (polyethylene terephthalate) on physico-chemical characteristics of bitumen; to determine the optimum amount of polyethylene terephthalate, the temperature of the process of bitumen modification; to suggest options for formulations of polymer-bitumen binder, which can reduce the cost of products;
5. Show bitumen modifiers to produce polymer-modified compositions that differ in quality from bitumen;

6. Development of the technological scheme of the process of bitumen modification.

Obtained results:
The physical and chemical composition of bitumens of different grades produced at “JV “CASPIBITUM” LLP was studied, all bitumens were found to meet the requirements of the standard.
The physical and chemical composition of oil sludge of different origin has been studied. It has been defined, that oil-slime contains a considerable amount of water and mechanical impurities and can be used as a partial replacement of bitumen basis.
The modification of bitumen with oil sludge from Uzen and Zhetybai oil fields has been studied and the obtained results have been analyzed.
In order to carry out the process of bitumen modification the installation was made. Installation is a steel cylindrical reactor, which is heated electrically and the heating temperature is fixed by the temperature regulator. An agitator is connected to the top of the reactor, which allows for mechanical mixing of raw materials to intensify the process. The process of bitumen modification was conducted at a temperature of 175 ° C, stirring time up to 3 hours.
According to the results of experimental studies the optimal parameters of the process of preparation of polymer-bitumen binders have been determined: the amount of oil-slurry added to bitumen – 20 %; mixing temperature – 175 ° C, mixing time – 3 hours. Physico-chemical characteristics of oil sludge from Uzen and Zhetybai fields have been analyzed. Chemical composition of oil-slime is represented by paraffinic hydrocarbons and contains mechanical impurities up to 6 wt. %. In order to obtain modified bitumen polymer-bitumen compositions on the basis of road bitumen grade BND 100/130 with the addition of oil-slime and polymer modifier of SBS, Butonal, Elvaloy types were prepared. The results of modified bitumen with oil sludge from Uzen and Zhetybai fields have been compared. Polymer-bitumen binders, prepared by the modification of oil bitumen BND 100/130 with oil sludge additive according to the main physical and mechanical properties: softening temperature in the ring and ball, the depth of needle penetration, brittleness temperature, extensibility correspond to PMB 70/100 and PMB 100/130 specifications. If the content of oil sludge in polymer-modified bitumen is within 15-20 % it is considered to be economically sound.

IRN AP08856996 “The conceptual space of sacred texts in Mangistau (zhyrau poetic texts, epitaphic texts, petroglyphs)”

Project Supervisor: B.I. Nurdauletova, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor.

Grant financing sum: KZT 55017,2 thous. for 2020-2022, including by years: 2020 – KZT 12068,9 thous., 2021 – KZT 18612,2 thous., 2022 – KZT 24346,1 thous.

Topicality of the research: Burials in the area of Kara-Oi and Ustyurt in Mangistau are scientifically called “peak of the dead”. The history of these burial sites dates back to very ancient times. Epitaphic texts written in ancient runic script and Arabic script are often found on the graves in these burial sites. These texts have not yet been systematized and studied textually. Most of them are ancient texts of historical significance written in the ancient Chagatai language, which have not withstood the test of time for centuries, have been erased and are on the verge of extinction.

In the project the directions of Mangistau cultural text in need of representation – zhyrau works, epitaphic inscriptions in the synthesis of sacred meaning and inscriptions on the stones – symbolic signs in the context of verbal and non-verbal communication are considered as a factor that forms the ethnobrand, the image of the region as a part of the Kazakh idea.

Research objective: Determination and interpretation of the role and meaning of conceptual space (religious and mythological cognition, sacred concept, symbolic signs) of Mangistau art culture texts as symbols of regional identity, a component of the cultural landscape of Kazakhstan and universal cultural universals.
Obtained results:
Typological, structural analyses of poetic texts (zhyrau poetic tradition, epitaphic inscriptions, stones with inscriptions) are made. The sacred texts were compared with their analogues in other Turkic peoples;

Reconstruction of sacred texts of Mangistau zhyrau as a form of mental development of cultural space of the people (the concept “death”, the concept “perfect man”, the concept “creation of the world” were defined);
Historical and etymological characteristics of religious and mythological words and word combinations in zhyrau texts were made, their connection with folk notions in epitaphic inscriptions and pictographic symbols (ayats and sura from the Koran, lines of Kazakh joktau, Sufi terms) were revealed. Through their systematic study the Sufi cognition in humanity’s conception of the world and the natural world, good and evil and the essence of humanity were defined;
During the expedition a total of 68 symbols were photographed, the “Babylonian” table of two kinds. Among them, there are still undefined symbols. It is known that the oldest of the main symbols found in the monuments belong to the Sarmatian tribes, and the later ones to the Oghuz and Kazakh tribes. Currently, 3 runic inscriptions, 13 symbolic complexes (depending on the size of symbols, they are divided into 5 large and 8 small symbols) and 4 volumetric petroglyphs have been found in the area.
As the following sacred texts supplementing the sacred space of Mangistau were considered ancient monuments of writing related to the history of Mangistau. There was an analysis of valuable information on tribes inhabiting the territory of Mangistau, on their customs and traditions, on geographical description of the modern Mangistau land, on ancient geographical names and others, which are contained in the works of such Eastern scientists and researchers as Ibn Haukal, Al-Istahri, Ibn Fadlan and others.
During the expedition the Mangistau manuscript version of the work of the main representative of Sufism K. Yasawi “Diuani Hikmet” was identified, scientific comments were given and handed over to the regional museum of local lore;
