USTYRT ARROWS

Ustyurt is a deposit of clayey calcareous sandy stone rocks, about 600 kilometers long from southwest to northeast and about 400 kilometers wide. It lies in a depression or at a height of 300–350 meters above the bottom of the ancient Sarmatian Sea that existed millions of years ago.

There is a unique scientific phenomenon here called the “arrows of the plateau” that amaze the world. These arrows have not been found anywhere else before. In 1986 alone, about 30 arrows were discovered during aerial photography.

The arrows resemble triangular structures formed by two arrows with distinct ends. At the apex of the triangles there are rings about 10 meters in diameter, all oriented to the northeast. The current height does not exceed 80 cm.

They are also called “arans”. Their exact purpose is still unclear: according to one version, they were used to collect water in this arid region; according to another, for hunting and driving animals into enclosures.
