On April 24, the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan at Yessenov University held a commemorative event titled “Chernobyl: Tragedy and Lessons Learned”, marking the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
The event brought together Chernobyl cleanup participants from the Mangystau region, leaders of public organizations, as well as members of the university’s academic and student communities.
Welcoming remarks were delivered by A.A. Seidaliev, Vice President for Research and Development at Yessenov University, and O.N. Abdilov, Chairman of the Council of Elders of the Mangystau region. Professor E.D. Muralev presented a lecture titled “Nuclear Energy: Past, Present, and Future,” offering an expert perspective on the development of nuclear energy, its risks, and future prospects.
Y.I. Kerzhbaum, a participant in the Chernobyl cleanup operations, shared his personal recollections, emphasizing that professionalism and a strong sense of responsibility for human life are essential in preventing such tragedies. A.I. Mambetova, Dean of the Faculty of Pedagogy, announced the results of the essay competition “Chernobyl: Lessons of the Past and the Social Responsibility of Modern Society,” which received 240 submissions. Three winners were awarded based on the results.
As a tribute to the veterans who took part in the ликвидация efforts, students performed musical pieces, expressing sincere gratitude and respect.
